Prostate and breast cancers (PCa and BC) impact the highest number of men and women, respectively, in Canada and the United States every year.One of the most frequently deleted or mutated genes in human PCa and BC is the PTEN gene.The phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) protein plays a critical role in controlling cell growth and in ensuring non-malignant cell function.The loss of PTEN leads to changes that occurs in the cell.Changes in the levels of PTEN-targets may lead to oncogenic activities.In chapter 2, we show that PTEN loss in PCa cells leads to the upregulation of the Prorenin Receptor (PRR).PTEN regulation over PRR suggests that PRR may aid in tumorigenic activity upon tumor onset.PRR is an essential component of the vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase) complex.
