Abstract
Album 1: Italians 1780 – 1990 This is the third and last volume of photographic “albums” is the counterpart of the first volume of this series which traced the family of Valentine “Billy” Smith of Trenton, New Jersey. This volume focuses on the life and ancestors of his wife Alberta Jean Matelena. The 11 albums in the first volume detailed the lives of Anna Maria Kutarnia and Joseph John Smith who settled in Trenton in 1928. The 7 albums of the second volume continued the pictorial record of their son Valentine “Billy” Smith, from his life in Trenton with his wife Alberta beginning in 1947 to his retirement to Florida and concluded with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren into the year 2021. The 5 volumes in this third volume detail the origins of her family as told through photographs, from Italy, Ireland, Holland, and England to the colonies of New Netherland and New York with early forays into the Province of East New Jersey, being at the founding of Penn’s colony in 1683 and owning a tobacco plantation in Penn’s “3 Lower Counties”, Delaware, and crossing the river of the same name into Burlington, the capital of the Province of West New Jersey. Album 1 makes us familiar with Piedimonte Matese, the ancestral home of the forebears of Alberta Matelena, in the north of the Compania region of the Kingdom of Naples.
