Residential Systems in the Habsburg Low Countries: Suburban Villas and Urban palaces in Brussels

Abstract
To support his lifestyle, Charles of Croÿ, duke of Aerschot and grandee of Spain (1560-1612) relied on an extensive system of residences, spread across the entire southern part of the Low Countries and even Northern France, with clusters around the main Croÿ powerbases. Here we will focus on Brussels, which drew the Habsburg court constantly. We will examine the interplay between the Croÿ urban palace, located across from the ducal domain on the Coudenberg, and the duke’s maison de plaisance just beyond the city walls near the ponds of the faubourg Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. This manor house and the new ‘villa’ situated on the other side of the road to Leuven played a representational role, e.g. at the reception of the English ambassadors in the early seventeenth century. We will compare this constellation with similar ones from the late sixteenth century, such as Granvelle’s and Mansfeld’s.
