Þessi ritgerð fjallar um liti. Ég ákvað að skrifa um liti vegna þess að þrátt fyrir góða kunnáttu í íslensku finnst mér ég oft ekki vera sammála Íslendingum þegar kemur að því að lýsa litum. \n\tMaður spyr sig stundum hvort aðrir sjái lit á sama hátt. Þetta stafar af einkar huglægu eðli lita, enda torskilgreinanlegt fyrirbæri. Öll tungumál eru fær um að lýsa litum, en tungumál eru með mismörg og nákvæm orð um þá. Ólíkt hlutlægum hlutum eins og trjám eða steinum eru litir ekki eins takmarkaðir – menn eru stundum ósammála um það hvað einn eða annan lit ætti að kalla. Til dæmis eru ljósir hestar oft sagðir vera gráir á íslensku, en hvítir á frönsku. \n\tHvernig þróast litarorðaforði? Eru algildar reglur um það? Hvernig flokkast litarorð? Eru öll tungumál með orð yfir sömu litina? Hvaða áhrif hefur móðurmál manns á orðaval þegar kemur að því að lýsa lit? Hvað eru grundvallarlitarorð og hvers vegna eru ekki öll litarorð grundvallarlitarorð? Hvað hefur íslenska mörg litarorð? Hvaðan koma þau? Hversu mörg þeirra eru gamall arfur og hversu mörg eru af erlendum uppruna? Hvernig er íslenska frábrugðin móðurmáli mínu, Québec-frönsku? \n\tÍ þessari ritgerð verður reynt að komast að niðurstöðum um þessar spurningar. Með hjálp tveggja rannsakenda, Brents Berlins og Pauls Kays, og rannsókn þeirra á litum í tungumálum verður stefnt að því að reyna á kenningu þeirra um þróunarferli litarorða. Einnig verður reynt að þróa kenningu um eðli, aldur og stigveldi lita sem á sérstaklega við frumindóevrópsku og íslensku út frá verki Berlins og Kays. Síðan verður hugað að uppruna nýrri litarorða í íslensku og hvernig þau komust inn í málið, og verður fjallað um sérstöðu litarorðaforða íslenskunnar með tilliti til annarra evrópskra tungumála.
