Abstract
Post-war abandonment of industrial lands along waterfronts has provided an opportunity for regeneration and revitalization of urban waterfronts, in association with extensive ongoing urban renewal movements. Like many major cities with waterfronts, Toronto is inevitably facing this trend in the post-industrial era. This thesis explores potential design solutions to unite the core of Toronto with its waterfront by developing design strategies for East Bayfront, a prominent 22-hactors site on Lake Ontario. Design strategies gained from studying well-known successful waterfront redevelopments form the basis of the design concept - Unite? d'habitation. This concept has been realized through consideration of density, visibility, connectivity, public spaces, mixed use, and ecological role. A design for East Bayfront was produced to propose a Unite? d'habitation on the waterfront that integrates city, land, and water.
