Abstract
Le stereoscopie di Underwood permettono di cogliere uno “sguardo esterno” alla città, reso possibile da quello che possiamo considerare in termini di produzione, una delle più grandi imprese fotografiche americane. \nI fratelli Bert e Elmer Underwood, originari dell’Illinois, iniziarono la loro attività a partire dal 1882, quando a Ottawa fondarono la prima azienda impegnata nel commercio e nella distribuzione di fotografie stereoscopiche. Successivamente, dal 1890 in poi, divennero produttori di decine di migliaia di soggetti destinati a raggiungere tutto il mondo e fonte di un’enorme fortuna economica, interrottasi nel 1921, quando le loro lastre vennero acquisite dalla più diretta concorrente, la Keyston View Company.
