La pobreza hídrica es un fenómeno reciente surgido en los países desarrollados, de carácter urbano y entendido como la dificultad de los hogares para hacer frente al gasto en el consumo del agua. Mientras que en un principio se consideró en esta situación a aquellos hogares que destinaban una parte significativa de sus ingresos a este fin, en los países mediterráneos ha llegado a suponer un problema hasta el punto de que numerosos hogares afronten los recibos con dificultad, o incluso se produzcan impagos. Esta investigación pretende abordar este fenómeno mediante el estudio de caso de la ciudad de Alicante (España), tratando de solventar en primer lugar la dificultad de localizarlo en el espacio urbano. Medir y analizar la vulnerabilidad ante esta pobreza en las diferentes áreas de la ciudad a partir de datos públicos, comprobar su validez mediante el empleo de datos de incidencia (impagos) de la empresa Aguas de Alicante. Y, finalmente, analizar la evolución de la incidencia tras la crisis de 2008 y la generada por la COVID-19, al igual que la magnitud de la misma. Todo ello, contribuyendo a su vez a dar visibilidad a este fenómeno, cuyo estudio es incipiente en España.
