Abstract
De même que les 92 Résolutions étaient le récapitulatif des aspirations des Canadiens français, l’adresse de la Confédération des Six Comtés au peuple du Canada reprend, à un mois de la première rébellion, l’inspiration des résolutions formulées lors des assemblées populaires. Face au déploiement de troupes au Bas-Canada, Papineau appelle à la formation de comités de vigilance et au maintien de la stratégie de non-consommation de biens importés. Même si l’adresse n’est pas signée par Papineau, les idées, un certain lexique et des formules typiques du leader Patriote nous incitent à lui attribuer ces idées et ce texte où l’on retrouve des échos de la Déclaration d’indépendance des ÉtatsUnis. Le 4 octobre, les Fils de la Liberté avaient publié leur adresse « aux jeunes gens des colonies de l’Amérique du Nord » (voir Assemblées publiques, résolutions et déclarations de 1837-1838, textes recueillis et présentés par JeanPaul Bernard, Montréal, UNÉQ/VLB éditeur, 1988, p. 214-222).
