Civic visions: An exploration of university students' perceptions of the civic commitment of their campus community

Abstract
This thesis is an exploratory study of the factors within university campus environments which influence students' impressions of the civic commitment of individuals, groups and/or the institution at which they study. Its overall objective is to address the challenges which lie in understanding students' perceptions of the complex concept of civic commitment and in creating environments that encourage and model civic minded values and action. Data was primarily gathered through a reflexive photography methodology. Student research participants at three universities in the province of Ontario photographed campus images reflecting the civic commitment of their campus community and provided interviews to explain the meaning they assigned to these images. Findings provided insights into the range of visual impressions identified by the students as representative of civic commitment, the meanings these students assigned to these impressions and factors that influence the formation of the students' perceptions.
