Les chlorofluorocarbones (CFC ou fréons) sont des composés anthropiques. Ils pénètrent les eaux océaniques par échange gazeux à l'interface océan-atmosphère, et sont utilisés comme traceurs de la circulation océanique. Les mesures de CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113 et CCl4 dissous dans l'eau de mer sont effectués par chromatographie phase gazeuse couplée à un système de purge and trap. La présence de nouveaux fréons a pu être mise en évidence dans les eaux de formation récente. Les fréons ont permis de caractériser et dater les eaux formées par convection profonde dans l'Atlantique Nord. L'a ge apparente de la DSOW est par exemple de 12-16 ans. Les différentes veines d'écoulement de la LSW ont été mises en évidence. Disposant des données de CFC-11 et CFC-12 dans le bassin du Labrador entre 1990 et 2000, une étude des âges effectifs et des vitesses moyennes d'advection de la LSW a été réalisé. La LSW présente dans les 500 premiers mètres à l'Ouest du bassin d'Irminger est due à de la convection locale. Les vitesses varient en fonction des crus, des épisodes de convection et donc de la NAO. La LSW observée dans l'Atlantique Nord en 2002 est issue d'épisode de convection peu intense. Une analyse multitraceurs a permis d'améliorer l'estimation des âges et de déterminer la contribution de chaque masse d'eaux aux transports de fréons. Les transports de fréons au travers d'une section entre le Groenland et le Portugal se font principalement vers le Sud par les masses d'eaux formées par convection profonde dans l'Atlantique Nord ( LSW, DSOW, ISOW). Ils sont tout à fait significatifs. Egal à 0, 458 mmol/s pour le CFC-11 , il représente au moins 6 % du flux extrait de l'atmosphère.
