Abstract
If you haven't spent four years here, you haven't really seen the whole picture of Hoya athletics.Only the beleagured Hilltop seniors have that distinction -and only these same seniors can tell the tales of dizzying success and abject failure, of indescribable ineptitude and grudging triumph, of hell and high water and cows jumping over blue moons that have characterized The Scene Here since the dim, dark fall of 1969.Perhaps we arrived too late.We were here for the first and probably only significant happening in the last two decades.The bid of 1969-70 Hoyas to meet Louisiana State in the opening round of the National Invitational Tournament remains as the summit, as the zenith, of Georgetown athletic endeavor as we l<now it.Nothing else comes close.Maybe we should have been here a year earlier -when a fairly good Hoya squad blew its NIT chances in the closing weeks of the season.Perhaps we would have been innured by defeat, by lost chances, by might-have-beens.Instead, we were spoiled.We had immediate success.And as a result, perhaps we grew to expect too much.The 1970-71 squad was to be the 'best ever,' some mental midget drawing up a national preseason poll even had the foresight to rank it Number 16 in the entire country.Please.Our minds were dulled by the likes of collapses at Navy and disasters at the Cross.But nothing could have prepared you for the horror of 1971-72.The IVlarquette "44," Ron Brown's bank shot.Ken Charles 38, all added up to the incredible vacuum of total, mind-boggling defeat.Hope lingers eternal, and was reborn this past year in the person of John Thompson who may (or may not) be the answer, the new Moses, or even the new symbol of Joe Hoya as much as Jack "Blue and Gray" Magee was the symbol of the old.But even a new Hoya image cannot bring back That Championship Season.It's gone; with Artie and the Gorilla, Higgins and Geeber, Eddie Mac and Ziggy Zeitler; leaving us with the memories of Mitchell's tap against American, Laska's defense on Maravich, and Arthur's fight with Randy Blevins at Jacksonville.The highlight of our four years came and went long before we realized it had gone.We harbored dreams for the next three years, but the stuff of our dreams never managed the Crucial Wins, the Big Games.
