Abstract
Un dels documents que més ha impactat en el debat sobre el dret a decidir dels pobles ha estat el dictamen emès pel Tribunal Suprem del Canadà, on malgrat afirmar que el Quebec no té un dret a la secessió unilateral, dibuixa no obstant una via a partir del principi democràtic per permetre la celebració d'un referèndum per a la independència i, en cas d'una victòria clara del "sí", una negociació posterior. Un exemple de com cal interpretar les lleis: en el moment i per a la societat actual, fent possible la resolució política dels conflictes polítics.
