Analiso neste artigo a sociogênese das milícias de pardos e pretos em duas capitanias da América portuguesa: Pernambuco e Minas Gerais. Após propor comparações entre o recrutamento de gente nativa e de afrodescendentes, destaco o papel do escravismo e do desenraizamento social de africanos, bem como procuro examinar campos de tensão envolvendo pardos, pretos, autoridades coloniais e metropolitanas que culminam, com maiores ou menores percalços, com o processo de institucionalização das milícias negras. Finalmente, observo que as capitanias de Minas Gerais e Pernambuco são vistas como configurações sociais específicas e dotadas de autonomia significativa, mas interdependentes e conectadas, cujas histórias e instituições se viam frequentemente refletidas em documentos produzidos por milicianos e burocratas vinculados às suas governações.
