En el año 2018 el Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica invitó a una serie de expertos de diferentes países a una reunión técnica para el desarrollo de un documento que permitiese orientar la cooperación técnica brindada por el organismo en materias relacionadas con el uso de herramientas isotópicas, químicas e hidrológicas en operaciones mineras. En base a esto, se generó un documento interno, sobre el cual a su vez se preparó un manuscrito que a la fecha del envío de este resumen se encontraba en su segunda etapa de revisión en la revista de corriente principal Mine, Water and Environment. El foco del trabajo mencionado se centra en agua y minería, incluyendo aspectos ambientales, dinámica de aguas de minas, y problemas de contaminación. La guía es genérica para proyectos mineros ya que no se refiere en particular a un único tipo de faena. Se ha desarrollado bajo un enfoque de ciclo de vida, en especial para destacar el potencial o la necesidad de investigaciones integradas en cada etapa de una operación minera, “desde la cuna a la tumba”. Se han considerado tres tipos de minas: nuevas (es decir, en etapa de planificación), activas (faenas operativas) e históricas (inactivas o abandonadas). El uso práctico de análisis geoquímicos y de estudios isotópicos que se describe en el documento hace énfasis en la caracterización, la dinámica y los procesos hidrológicos tanto en términos de cantidad como de calidad del agua. Igualmente se considera el uso de trazadores ambientales y aquellos no ambientales de potencial interés. La guía se ha escrito para científicos (incluyendo especialistas en isótopos), profesionales encargados de la gestión ambiental, planificadores, consultores, y profesionales de organismos regulatorios y de fiscalización con intereses en proyectos mineros.
