Iranian diasporic identity: An ethnographic performance study of Iranian immigrants

Abstract
Using ethnographic, dramatistic, and oral history approaches over the last five years, I have gathered nearly fifty stories of diasporic journeys of Iranians in the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution of 1979. These stories were gathered during interviews, transcribed by me, and then developed into short performance pieces that included lyrics and songs. The performances were then staged and presented to audiences in theater venues and libraries in Los Angeles and several other locations throughout the United States and Canada. These performances constitute a unique archive of the history of contemporary Iranian diasporic experiences. They are autobiographic vignettes that have helped constitute an artistic vision of Iranian exiles??? own sense of community and their migratory experiences. In this thesis I will reflexively discuss the process of production of the performances and some of the responses they have received from the narrators and the audiences. Together, the diasporic performance fieldwork and the construction of a methodological perspective constitute a new contribution to the existing literature of Iranian diaspora and further an exciting contribution to scholarship in qualitative research in communication studies.
