Abstract
Sukobima prožeta povijest Europe potaknula je, još od nastanka koncepta države, osmišljanje raznih ideja o ujedinjenju u neku vrstu zajednice koja bi osigurala mir među narodima. Europska Unija kao najveća političko-ekonomska unija na kontinentu nastala je tek nakon svjetskih ratova i na poticaj SAD-a koji je u tim okolnostima razvojem prestigao Stari svijet. Kao takva, od osnivanja predstavlja željeni standard i poticaj razvoja u svim zemljama Europe, a danas broji 27 država članica. Republika Hrvatska pridružila se 2013. godine, a napori unije za oporavak zemlje od posljedica Domovinskog rata i prethodnih političkih režima te gospodarski i društveni napredak prisutni su od proglašenja nezavisnosti. Ipak, sam proces pridruživanja trajao je cijelo desetljeće, a usklađivanje i razvoj i dalje traju. Kroz cijelo to razdoblje hrvatski nacionalni identitet nailazio je na prepreke pri stvaranju nove slike na van, ali i unutarnje sukobe interesa.
