Integration versus assimilation within minority groups in North America: multidimensional acculturation measurement for francophone communities in the Canadian prairies

Abstract
The Francophone communities within the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan constitute the target group of the present study focused on acculturation processes. A survey aiming at measuring acculturation has been conducted, including a total of 223 participants. The data hereby displayed are the result of the statistical treatment of the responses extracted from a 24-question questionnaire, an adapted version of the Vancouver Index of Acculturation model. A multidimensional scale which includes behavioral and psychological domains has been designed to measure the Acculturation Index of the target group in relation to both the Canadian mainstream and Francophone heritage culture. The conclusions here presented support our hypothesis that the Francophones living in the Canadian Prairies generally opt for integration, whereas assimilation and separation are not often regarded as the preferred mode of acculturation.
