Un índice de calidad de agua (lCA), consiste básicamente en una expresión simple de \nuna combinación más o menos compleja de un número de parámetros que puede ser \nrepresentado por un número, un rango, una descripción verbal, un símbolo o un color. \nEl objetivo principal de este trabajo es estudiar diferentes índices de calidad de agua \naplicado en el río Lluta como una herramienta de evaluación de aguas superficiales \ncontinentales. \nEn el estudio se utilizaron las bases de dato de la Dirección General de Aguas (DGA) \nde las estaciones de calidad de agua del río Lluta tales como, Colpitas en Alcérreca, \nCaracarani en Alcérreca, Lluta en Tocontasi y Lluta en Panamerica. \nSegún la base de datos histórica de la zona se evidencia que la cantidad de boro y \narsénico en el agua del río Lluta efectivamente sobrepasan la norma chilena de riego \nNCh 1333, siendo apta sólo para el riego de especies tolerantes a este ambiente. \nSe aplicaron varios índices tales como el índice simplificado de calidad de agua (ISQA) \nde España, CCME-WQI (Canadian Council of Mnisters of the Environment - Water \nQuality Index) de Canadá y el índice de calidad de agua Cade-ldepe de Chile. \nSe puede señalar que et índice de calidad de agua más adecuado para ser aplicado en \nel río Lluta es el CCME-WQI de Canadá. Presenta una estructura de cálculo que \npermite una evaluación más amplia e integral de la calidad del agua, ya que considera \nla variación en el tiempo y en el espacio. En su elaboración no se obliga a adoptar \nparámetros específicos para el cálculo, sino que deja abierta la elección de los mismos \nal buen juicio profesional y de acuerdo a la norma chilena vigente. Con esta flexibilidad \nque da el índice es más fácil realizar un análisis en lugares donde las variables del \nmonitoreo son acotadas.
