Les laïcs avaient quelques devoirs à accomplir: prier pour le succès de l'évènement conciliaire et faire des efforts pour une sanctification personnelle. Au Québec, on a voulu leur donner la possibilité d'apporter leurs vœux et leurs suggestions lors de la phase préparatoire du concile. C'est ainsi qu'ont été organisées au Québec, à partir du mois d'octobre 1961, une série de 13 consultations préconciliaires des laïcs. Il s'agissait là d'un trait particulier au Québec puisque, dans le monde entier, nous n'en comptons pas autant. À l'étude des rapports rédigés suite à ces rencontres, nous découvrirons comment, à la veille de Vatican II, les laïcs percevaient leur Église locale, quelles étaient leurs principales doléances et suggestions. Nous ferons donc une analyse de contenu des rapports rédigés suite aux rencontres préconciliaires de Québec, Saint-Jérôme et Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière.
