Au XVIIe siècle, les jardins d'apothicaires qui accueillaient déjà des plantes médicinales venues du Levant ou de l'Afrique ont vu leurs collections s'embellir d'espèces nouvelles venant des Antilles, d'Acadie et du Canada. Riche en promesses, la flore de ces contrées exotiques, permettait d'enrichir le patrimoine botanique. Reflétant les préoccupations des collectionneurs, elle établissait aussi la célébrité d'un jardin princier. Pour les sciences, une ère nouvelle s'annonçait. En Amérique, les premières explorations ont ouvert aux botanistes un vaste champ d'étude. Identifiant les événements et les conditions qui ont présidé à l'introduction en Europe des espèces étrangères, ce mémoire jette un regard sur une conquête, celle de l'homme sur la nature, symbolisée par des végétaux qu'il ramène avec lui. Les premières descriptions de la flore américaine en ont révélé la valeur. Quelques plantes médicinales, textiles ou alimentaires sous le burin du graveur ont fait connaître le caractère particulier de la forêt laurentienne. En Nouvelle-France, la curiosité portée à la flore indigène nous permet de tracer le portrait des enjeux économiques et commerciaux qui ont inspiré les découvreurs alors que se lisent dans la trame des manuels de botanique européens le cadre artistique, l'évolution des sensibilités et l'épanouissement d'un art, celui de l'illustration botanique.
