Abstract
Au Québec, durant la période 1900-1920, le caricaturiste Joseph Charlebois (1872-1935) est une figure connue du milieu de la presse, il réalise pendant près d'un an, dans La Presse , une des premières séries en bandes dessinées, il caricature pour les feuilles nationalistes d'alors--- Les Débats, Le Nationaliste et L'Action ---, il publie une dizaine d'albums de caricatures et il dirige son propre journal satirique Le Taon . Cette époque constitue un tournant pour les caricaturistes qui voient leur métier progressivement reconnu dans la presse alors que celle-ci se modernise et élargit son lectorat, faisant du caricaturiste un des piliers du quotidien. Puisque jusqu'à maintenant, les études de la presse ont négligé d'aborder le discours des dessinateurs, pourtant fort significatif dans la construction de l'identité d'un journal, nous effectuons, dans ce mémoire, une recherche de fond, véritable défrichage, en retraçant la vie professionnelle de Charlebois et en resituant son oeuvre dans son contexte général.
