ABSTRACT: Mining waste discharge is frequently associated with environmental issues, such as water quality degradation and negative impacts on wildlife and vegetation. This situation is often caused by the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD) resulting from tailings generated by concentration plants. However, in addition to addressing the geochemical instability, ensuring the physical stability of retention basins for these tailings is equally crucial for responsible environmental management. Efficient tailings management in mining projects is essential, but it poses challenges due to the considerable costs that are difficult to estimate during the initial stages of mining operations. Mining companies must anticipate the costs associated with stabilizing the geotechnical and geochemical environment of the mining site to comply with the Quebec Mining Act. In this context, a project was undertaken to create a predictive cost model based on ore drilling and data collected at the onset of mining operations. A literature review was conducted to understand the characteristics of the tailings, the methods of management and restoration, and the current approaches for assessing the feasibility of alternative mining tailings management strategies. By characterizing ten ore drilling samples from the Raglan mine through mineralogical, static, and kinetic tests, the potential for acid generation from the material was determined. Subsequently, the costs for densification activities, restoration coverings, and environmental monitoring were estimated. Using a life cycle methodology, the net costs for four different configurations for managing mining tailings were evaluated, resulting in a range of minimum and maximum values. The separation of acid-generating material from tailings have showed economic advantages. However, the significant spread between minimum and maximum values represented a major limitation of the applied methodology. The distribution of net costs per scenario and alternative was also analyzed, revealing that the share of environmental monitoring costs did not exceed 1% of the total waste management cost. Furthermore, it was observed that the proportion of restoration costs increased as the residues were less densified. In conclusion, the objective of this project was to create a predictive cost model for mining waste management considering various configurations and alternatives. The separation of acid generating material proved economically advantageous for restoration. Nonetheless, the methodology used has significant limitations due to the magnitude of estimated values. Environmental monitoring constitutes a small portion of the total net costs, while the rise in restoration costs is associated with a decrease in tailings densification.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
