Abstract
Introduit au Québec dans la toute première moitié du XIXe siècle, le corbillard à traction chevaline disparut presque complètement avec l’apparition des fourgons motorisés vers 1920. Malgré l'oubli dont il est depuis lors l'objet, ce véhicule funéraire reste un précieux témoin du passé des Québécois. Intéressant tout à la fois l'étude des pratiques cultuelles, de la technologie et des arts, le corbillard hippomobile raconte à sa façon l’histoire des habitudes funéraires des Québécois. Il traduit aussi les goûts et la sensibilité d'une époque aujourd'hui révolue par son aspect formel et son ornementation. Et parce qu'en plus il a traversé la période de l’industrialisation, il témoigne des difficultés des artisans, de leurs efforts d'adaptation et de leurs solutions.
