Jusqu’à ce jour, les recherches faites en Amérique du Nord sur les conséquences professionnelles et personnelles occasionnées par l’occupation d’un emploi précaire ont été peu nombreuses. Cet intérêt pour la précarité du travail a davantage été développé par les pays européens qui disposent aujourd’hui d’un nombre important de recherches. La recherche proposée dans ce mémoire est exploratoire et concerne la situation des employées à temps partiel du Complexe Hospitalier de la Sagamie à Chicoutimi. Deux démarches ont été effectuées : des entrevues ont été réalisées auprès de 11 participantes et trois variables ont été mesurées auprès de 203 participantes volontaires à l’aide de questionnaires auto-administrés. Deux groupes de travailleuses à niveau de précarité distinct sont représentés : un groupe de travailleuses à temps partiel régulier et un second groupe à temps partiel occasionnel. L’enquête visait d’abord à vérifier si l’intensité des conséquences, causée par un statut d’emploi temps partiel, était influencée par le degré de précarité. Les résultats aux questionnaires ont permis de conclure que le degré de précarité n’influence pas l’intensité des conséquences encourues par un statut d’emploi à temps partiel. Le traitement des informations qualitatives, par l’analyse des entrevues, a permis d’identifier des difficultés vécues par les travailleuses au niveau professionnel, personnel et social.
