Nas últimas décadas, muitas mulheres da camada média brasileira assumiram simultaneamente os papéis de trabalhadora e mãe, funções habituais à maioria das mães trabalhadoras da camada popular. Este estudo, fundamentado na Rede de Significações, investigou os sentidos construídos sobre maternidade, cuidados infantis e trabalho por quatro trabalhadoras da camada média e seis grupos de mães trabalhadoras da camada popular. Foram realizadas entrevistas e grupos-focais. As mulheres atribuíram exclusivamente à mãe a função de educar e cuidar dos filhos. Elas encontram dificuldade em integrar os papéis de mãe e trabalhadora. O trabalho assume diferentes sentidos nas duas camadas sociais.
