CONTEXTE : La consommation de plusieurs médicaments, la polymédication, s'accentue dans la population. Elle touche particulièrement les aînés et les personnes souffrant de maladies chroniques. Toutefois, l'impact du lieu de résidence (urbain ou rural) sur ce phénomène est encore peu documenté. BUT : Cette revue descriptive vise à explorer les écrits portant sur l'association entre le lieu de résidence, rural ou urbain, et le nombre de médicaments consommés et la présence de polymédication. MÉTHODE : La consultation de Medline et Embase avec les mots clés polypharmacie, rural, urbain et défavorisation, entre 2000 à 2017, a permis d'identifier onze articles répondant aux critères d'inclusion. RÉSULTATS : Les études ont été réalisées dans dix pays (Canada=1). Des onze articles inclus, dix concernaient les aînés. La polymédication était plus fréquente en milieu urbain dans six études; une étude indiquait le contraire et quatre études ne démontraient pas de différence. L'âge avancé, le nombre accru de maladies chroniques et une faible santé auto-rapportée étaient associés à la polymédication. CONCLUSION : Les données sur l'influence du milieu de résidence sur la polymédication semblent conflictuelles. Des variations interrégionales et interpays sont importantes, rendant la généralisation difficile. Des études sont nécessaires pour déterminer si les écarts enregistrés sont le résultat d'un accès aux soins différents, de variations dans la prévalence des maladies ou dans la qualité des prescriptions.
