L'importation d'estampes sous le Régime français est un phénomène qui, jusqu'à très récemment, avait peu intéressé les chercheurs en histoire de l'art ancien du Québec. Et pourtant, il s'agit là de l'un des aspects les plus révélateurs du gout pour les arts en Nouvelle-France. Dès l'arrivée des premiers missionnaires, l'estampe fut utilisée comme moyen d'évangélisation. L'imagerie faisait également partie du décor quotidien des communautés religieuses qui s'établirent progressivement sur les rives du Saint-Laurent, et commandait diverses pratiques de dévotion. Ces pratiques rayonnèrent dans les paroisses et chez les particuliers, dont les inventaires après décès nous fournissent de précieuses indications sur l'ampleur des importations d'imagerie aussi bien religieuse que profane. Notre étude vise à définir les paramètres de cette importation d'estampes tout au long du Régime français, en s'appuyant sur un éventail fragmentaire d'images anciennes conservées par les communautés religieuses, que nous avons du compléter par une recherche dans les collections d'estampes européennes, et sur une documentation écrite aussi variée qu'inédite. Cet effort de reconstitution de l'univers visuel de la Nouvelle-France, par le biais des importations d'estampes, nous à révèle aussi bien un panorama diversifie au plan religieux, que l'existence insoupçonnée d'un décor imagé profane d'une grande variété.
