La novela de la que nos ocupamos: <i>El Paciente inglés</i> del escritor canadiense nacido en Colombo, Ceylán, Sri Lanka, publicada en 1992, y que le granjeó a su autor el Brooker Prize así como el Governor´s Award for fiction in Canada indaga en los efectos y alcances de la violencia extrema de la guerra y del sufrimiento sobre las personas. Presenta los efectos de la violencia en múltiples manifestaciones como una suerte de círculos concéntricos que, irradiándose a partir del núcleo duro de la violencia bélica desatada por la Segunda Guerra Mundial, afecta de modos diversos, antagónicos y siempre inasibles a cuatro sobrevivientes que, por variadas razones, confluyen en una Villa de la Toscana. Resulta pertinente aclarar que nos centraremos en la novela y sólo a modo comparativo haremos alusión a la versión cinematográfica de Minghella, que amplió e internacionalizó el conocimiento de Ondaatje.
