Abstract
In 2019, local developer Mike Schout approached Wilmot Township council about creating a nature wetlands reserve on vacate land on the Nith River floodplain behind Smith's Creek Drive, New Hamburg. On June 10, 2023, his environmental vision officially opened. Designed by conservationist Phil Holst, the 22 hectare (55 ac) site featur es a 1.6 km (1 mi) raised boardwalk leading to the Nith River and includes 8 ha (20 ac) of pollinator meadows, 10,000 tree plantings, a stormwater management pond to process runoff from the adjacent residen ces , turtle ponds, raised nesting platforms for herons, osprey and eagles and hiking paths. Mr. Schout contributed half of the preserve's $3 million development cost.
