Abstract
However, there are a few factors that may keep it from returning to its all-time-high. Monarch butterflies are making a comeback. Popular Science says number of Monarchs staying in Mexico this winter went up by over 250-percent compared to last year. They retreat to Mexico and cover trees and branches to escape the cold weather of the U.S. and Canada. While on the trees, their population's measured in acres. In 2015, there were just under 3 acres of monarchs... This year there are about 10. The rise in population is making researchers optimistic. While it's still got a way to go, they're hoping the population'll get back to where it was 20 years ago -- at almost 50 acres. However, there are two things that may keep it from returning to its all-time-high. Their preferred food -- milkweed -- is becoming more and more scarce along their routes in North America... ...and illegal logging in Mexico is stripping them of their habitat.
