ABSTRACT: This doctoral thesis proposes a new numerical modeling strategy generating probabilistic hydrographs of overtopping embankment dam failure adapted to the current normative framework. In Quebec and around the world, the current legislative and regulatory framework leaves to the discretion of dam owners, the definition of the failure scenario used to determine the dam failure hydrograph. In the current dam failure studies, the routing of this dam failure hydrograph makes it possible to standardize the mapping of the flood zones necessary for the consequences’ evaluation. The formulation of the "breach" scenario is based on assumptions describing the shape of the breach (e.g. trapezoidal, rectangular), the breach’s location (e.g. at the center of the structure) and the time formation of the final breach. In practice, engineers use normative frameworks to define a failure scenario, deemed the “most critical”, to model the “breach” routing scenario. Although for concrete dams the complete and almost instantaneous rupture scenario is a little tainted with uncertainties, in the case of embankment dams, it’s the evolutive and progressive process involved in the breach formation of an embankment dam failure that introduces unquantifiable and unconsidered uncertainties into current dam safety studies. The probabilistic approach developed uses the Monte Carlo method to quantify the uncertainties related to the standardized failure parameters (ratio of the bottom width on the dam height, formation time and average breach slope) in order to translate the uncertainties of the standardized failure hydrograph. The probability sampling relies on a sample of historical overtopping embankment dam failure case studies recording the three standardize failure parameters to generate random normalized failure scenarios. The Monte Carlo integration and analysis of uncertainties are carried out with the probabilistic model developed in this thesis. To do so, the strategy was carried out by compiling the largest historical dam failure database currently available in the literature (Bernard-Garcia and Mahdi, 2020) and which has been the subject of various publications. This served as an input in the probabilistic model of overtopping embankment dam failure which was programmed, developed, and compiled in a software entitled PROBABREACH (Version 1.0, 2022) using Matlab. This program has the advantage of having been coupled with a user interface facilitating its use and is supplied with a user’s guide.»

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
