Recent neuroimaging studies have found greater left and right prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity during spatial source and temporal recency tasks, respectively.It is unclear whether these findings result from inherent differences in PFC contributions to spatial vs. temporal memory retrieval or to differences in task difficulty and/or structure.To address this issue, I used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess healthy adults while they performed spatial and temporal memory tasks for faces, matched for structure and difficulty.Findings show greater left-lateralized activity during both spatial and temporal context retrieval tasks, with a greater degree of recruitment during spatial tasks.A response number manipulation, designed to identify regions related to selection, activated the left-inferior PFC.After controlling for task structure, such that both spatial and temporal retrieval tasks required more categorical versus continuous processing, we only observed left-lateralized PFC activations; rather than previously reported laterality effects in PFC during spatial vs. temporal context retrieval.We interpret these activations as reflecting left PFC involvement in domain-general cognitive control processes that are important for categorically based memory retrieval; such as, response selection and covert verbalization of stimuli. ResumDes tudes rcentes de neuro-imagerie ont trouv une plus grande activit du cortex prfrontal (CPF) gauche et droit lors de tche de mmoire spatiale et de rcence temporelle, respectivement.Il n'est pas clair si ces rsultats sont dus Neural Correlates 4une diffrence inhrente de la contribution du CPF aux tches de remmoration spatiale et temporelle, ou s'il s'agit de diffrences dans la difficult et/ou la structure des tches.Pour rpondre cette question, j'ai utilis l'imagerie par rsonance magntique fonctionnelle pour valuer la performance d'adultes en sant lors de tches de mmoire spatiale et temporelle pour les visages, en appariant les tches au niveau de leur structure et de leur difficult.Les rsultats dmontrent une plus grande activit latralise gauche durant toutes les tches, en plus de dmontrer un plus grand degr de recrutement lors des tches spatiales, qui sont de nature catgorique.De plus, une manipulation du nombre de rponse, conue pour dterminer quelles rgions se rapportent la slection des rponses et la mmoire de travail verbal, activa le CPF infrieur gauche.Ces rsultats suggrent une contribution latralise gauche du CPF pour les rseaux favorisant les tches de mmoire catgorique ainsi que les tches de traitement excutif gnral, plutt que spcifiquement pour l'information spatiale ou temporelle.
