Abstract
어느 집단의 문화적 전통은 그 집단속에서 성장하는 개인의 성격형성에 큰 영향을 주며 따라서 그의 가치관, 인생관, 그리고 그가 난관에 부닥쳤을 때 이를 해결해 나가는 행동의식, 대인관계의 특징을 크게 좌우한다. (Kluckhohn, 1956). 그러므로 생물학적 병인이 뚜렷하지 않은 정신질환의 경우 문화는 그 질환을 보는 집단의 관점, 증상 및 치료상의 특징을 규정하며 병을 유발하거나 정신건강을 보존하고 유지시키는 기능을 갖추고 있다. 문화의 특성이 정신건강문제에 어떻게 관련되는가를 연구하는 정신의학의 특수분야를 문화정신의학, 또는 횡문화정신의학(Transcultural Psychiatry)이라 하며 그 시조는 20세기초 독일의 기술정신의학을 확립한 Emil Kraepelin이라 할수 있으나 다수인종이 모여사는 미국과 Canada에서 특히 활발한 연구조사가 실시되고 있고, (Wittkower, 1978) 우리나라서도 이 방면의 연구가 적지 않다.
