Abstract
El proceso creativo de esta historia tiene dos etapas de desarrollo. La primera corresponde a la idea inicial. En el 2007, siendo estudiante de escritura de guion en Montreal, encontré un artículo sobre el pueblo de Pomuch en México: en vísperas al día de Todos los santos, sus habitantes abren las tumbas del cementerio y limpian los huesos de sus difuntos. En ese entonces me impresionó el contraste entre esta tradición y el mundo que conocía, me pareció una imagen casi fantástica. Vivía en un barrio montrealés ordenado y silencioso y no conocía a otros latinos. Me pregunté qué pasaría si algún peruano quisiera reproducir un rito tradicional en los camposantos de Canadá. Escribí mi primer guion sobre una mujer migrante que quiere celebrar en Montreal la fiesta de Todos los santos como en su pueblo. Al volver al Perú no logré convertir ese guion en película, era una producción costosa. Lo guardé en un cajón. La segunda etapa corresponde a la Maestría de Escritura Creativa. En la entrevista de admisión el jurado me preguntó si querría desarrollar esta historia en una novela. Al ser aceptada decidí intentarlo, pero tendría que escribirla diferente. Así ha sido, la historia toma otro rumbo por varias razones: porque el papel no tiene las limitaciones de la producción audiovisual; porque cambiar de formato me da la libertad de contar más de lo que había imaginado antes; y porque el tiempo ha sido mi aliado dándome la oportunidad de repensar a los personajes, profundizar en sus motivaciones, deseos y pasado. Para el desarrollo he usado la investigación de campo hecha en la primera etapa y la he completado con nuevas lecturas literarias, ensayos, trabajos sociológicos y entrevistas.
