Abstract
Professor Wernimont discusses and demonstrates "Performing archive: Edward S. Curtis and 'the vanishing race'." "Performing archive" is a Mellon-funded Digital Humanities Project, produced using the Scalar platform. In addition to aggregating nearly 2,500 items related to Curtis and his ethnographic and photographic work with western American and Canadian tribes, the "archive" also brings together a number of new scholarly works designed to facilitate teaching with Curtis' work. \n<br/><br/>\nThe Edward S. Curtis photographs are from Claremont Colleges Library Special Collections. The library holds a complete set in the William Smith Mason Collection of Western Americana, twenty-five volumes of text with an additional twenty portfolios of plates, published 1907–1930.
