Abstract
L’articolo analizza il distico Aen. X 375-376, contenuto nell’esortazione di Pallante ai compagni, in quanto esemplare della tecnica epica di Virgilio per varie ragioni: l’allusività nei confronti di Omero (Il. XXI 550-570 e XIII 813-816), da cui appare mutuato; il ricorso ad una delle risorse formali più care a Virgilio, quella di «tema e variazione», articolata sull’arco di due versi; infine un’auto-testualità che conferisce a quei ‘recuperi’ omerici un certo spessore di sentimenti, perché, proprio nel libro X, che sviluppa il tema del rapporto fra padri e figli, affiora dalle parole di Pallante un duplice ricordo del padre Evandro: il suo passato scontro con Erilo, un nemico mostruoso dotato di tre anime, e l’evocazione, da parte di Evandro stesso, di quell’episodio, nel momento del drammatico congedo dal figlio.
