Bir kütüphaneci olarak başladığı akademik kariyerinde Roma tarihi ve arkeolojisi hakkında pek çok kitap yazmış olan İngiliz tarihçi Southern, bu eseri Roma’nın büyük bir devlet ve imparatorluk olma yolunda belki de elindeki en büyük silahı olan ordusu hakkında kaleme almıştır. Roma ordusunun tarihi ve geleneklerine ilişkin bu araştırma kitabı, konuyla alakalı sağlam ve güncel bir giriş işlevi görecektir. Southern’in Roma ordusuyla ve askerî meselelerle alakalı belli başlı konuları ayrıntılı bir biçimde ele alışı göze çarpar, ancak bu ayrıntılı işlediği yerlerin, genel olarak Roma tarihinin bilinen konuları olduğunu belirtmekte fayda vardır.
