Abstract
This review paper recounts the vicissitudes of a Madrid hospital placed under the patronage of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, known as the “Italian Hospital,” which survived for 300 years only to disappear in the last quarter of the 19th century. The evolution of the hospital, born from the fact that, at that time, in the late 16th century, Madrid was a center of attraction for Spaniards from any province and foreigners from diff erent parts of the world, as well as the events that took place there during its existence, are subject to revisionism based on the documentation available in this article to better understand its foundation, evolution, decline, and disappearance. Founded in 1579, by 1596 the construction was likely not in an optimal state of preservation, as the church and hospital authorities, along with Nuncio Camillo Caetano, selected the plans of Patricio Cajés to rebuild the structure. The history of this institution spans three centuries with numerous reforms, expansions, and reconstructions, and it was ultimately demolished in 1884 due to its dilapidated state.
