La relance économique post-Covid-19 offre une opportunité de construire un futur plus juste, propre et résilient aux impacts climatiques si nous pouvons échapper à l’influence délétère de l’industrie des carburants fossiles sur nos politiques publiques et reconceptualiser la lutte contre le changement climatique afin de mieux appréhender et comprendre ses enjeux fondamentaux, les communiquer et les aborder après des décennies d’échecs. L’article explore l’influence de l’industrie fossile sur les politiques fédérales en matière environnementale et climatique de la dernière décennie, signe de l’avènement d’une «?pollutocratie?» qui assaille nos institutions publiques afin de nous maintenir dans un piège carbone et éviter ou ralentir la décarbonisation de l’économie. Le problème fondamental de l’inaction climatique et des lacunes de la législation environnementale tiendrait à la corruption systémique et à la prise en otage de la fonction réglementaire où les corporations et individus assujettis à la règlementation deviennent les «?clients » de l’institution publique et voient leurs intérêts privés primer sur l’intérêt public que l’état est censé défendre.
