Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

» \n« This study addresses parental knowledge through the lens of family experiences and has the unique feature of addressing the issue from the perspective of parents. The main objective is to identify the meaning given by parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as to their experience of how their parental knowledge is recognized and used in the actual practice of educational workers. Phenomenological hermeneutics was chosen as the methodological approach for the study. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine parent participants living in Quebec, from various school board districts and using various Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS) service points. A phenomenological analysis of the data was done to develop individual phenomenological narratives that accurately described each of the nine participants' experience of how their parental knowledge is recognized. Each participant validated their individual phenomenological narrative. Then, systematic analysis of the data was done using NVivo qualitative data analysis software to identify themes related to the various meanings given by the participants as to their experience of how their parental knowledge is recognized and to come up with a general description of the typical structure of the phenomenon under study. This shed light on the interpretation that can be derived from parents' experiences of having their parental knowledge recognized by educational workers. Finally, this interpretation was situated within the literature, our theoretical framework, and was then triangulated by researchers through our research committee. The analysis showed that the participants all experienced recognition and non-recognition of their parental knowledge. However, it is evident that these experiences cannot be ascribed to a specific service network, but rather to a combination of contexts, attitudes and behaviours that facilitate or inhibit the recognition of parental knowledge. The analysis identified four indicators of recognition of parental knowledge: being listened to, being part of the team, being supported, and being treated in a non-judgmental manner. To better grasp parents' perception of their experiences of having their parental knowledge recognized or not, the following elements were derived from those four indicators: the nature of the parental knowledge shared, opportunities for sharing parental knowledge, the way they were listened to, the role parents wanted to play and the level of involvement they sought, the importance of being explicitly and positively supported by others, the impact of judgement, and issues of courtesy stigma and social desirability. Finally, in addition to emphasizing the respondents' desire to be considered as partners in a shared discussion process and to participate actively in all stages of making decisions about their child, the four indicators emphasize the parents' desire to work in real partnership with educational workers. Our research highlighted the perception of and meaning given to the recognition of parental knowledge and the way it is taken into consideration by educational workers. Moreover, making parents' contribution in terms of knowledge visible has practical benefits for educational purposes, namely by supporting partnership and collaboration practices, as well as the implementation and optimization of intervention plans. Finally, in addition to contributing to research on ASD, children, and family support, the resulting insights can apply more broadly to other groups of children with disabilities. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Autism Spectrum Disorder, parental knowledge, family, family education, resilience, partnership. »

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
