Abstract
This study will attempt to place the captivity memoirs of Temevarl Osman Aa (1670-1725) within the greater literary tradition of Ottoman autobiographical writing, and to analyze his experiences in captivity with reference to the sociological condition of slavery.By analyzing the historical and social development of Ottoman autobiographical writing, the objective of this study will be to illuminate the forms of self-expression and self-definition utilized by Osman Aa as well as to uncover the motivations behind the writing of his memoirs.An indepth reading of the contents of these memoirs will be undertaken in order to situate them within their particular historical setting of war between the Ottoman and Austrian Habsburg Empires.Furthermore, the subjective experience of enslavement of an Ottoman Muslim will be addressed based on these memoirs.Essentially, this thesis will show that Osman Aa wrote his memoirs not only to insist upon the sense of personhood that he was denied by his captors but also to protect himself from the suspicions of his peers upon his return to Ottoman lands, and to show that he kept his confessional and cultural identity throughout his captivity. RsumCette tude situera les mmoires de captivit de Temevarl Osman Aa (1670-1725) dans la plus grande tradition littraire de l'criture autobiographique ottomane, et d'analyser ses expriences en captivit en rfrence la condition sociologique de l'esclavage.En analysant le dveloppement historique et social de l'criture autobiographique ottomane, l'objectif de cette tude sera d'clairer les formes d'expression de soi et la dfinition de soi utilises par Osman Aa ainsi que de dcouvrir les motivations derrire l'criture de ses mmoires.Une lecture approfondie du contenu de ces mmoires sera entreprise afin de les situer dans leur contexte historique particulier de guerre entre les empires ottoman et autrichien des Habsbourg.En outre, l'exprience subjective de l'esclavage d'un musulman ottoman sera aborde sur la base de ces mmoires.Essentiellement, cette thse montrera qu'Osman Aa a crit ses mmoires non seulement pour insister sur le sens de le statut de personne qui lui a t refus par ses ravisseurs, mais aussi pour se protger des soupons de ses pairs son retour sur les terres ottomanes, et pour montrer qu'il a gard son identit confessionnelle et culturelle tout au long de sa captivit.i
