Abstract
In domestic chickens, sexual maturation can be induced by increasing the photoperiod. Increased stimulation of hypothalamic photoreceptors triggers the release of gonadotropin releasing hormone which in turn induces the synthesis and release of gonadotropins by the pituitary gland. Increasing levels of gonadotropins then stimulate the development and maturation of the gonads. In addition to this photo-stimulatory axis, an inhibitory photo-responsive pathway involving melatonin produced by the retina and pineal gland has also been proposed. The goal of this thesis was to determine the retinal involvement in the stimulation and inhibition of sexual maturation using a genetically blind line of chickens (Smoky Joe). The blind females demonstrated an earlier age to first egg and a higher egg production than the sighted birds. The blind males showed evidence of an earlier testicular growth and maturation than the sighted birds. This suggests that the lack of retina results in decreased inhibition of the reproductive axis.
