La questione dei vaccini chiama in causa la relazione tra salute pubblica e autonomia individuale e tra evidenze scientifiche e loro traduzione in dispositivi e applicazioni sociali. Riemerso di recente in Italia con l’estensione dei vaccini obbligatori, il tema dell’«esitazione vaccinale» è stato ulteriormente alimentato dalla pandemia Covid-19, con le incertezze a livello di expertise e decisione politica – il cui rapporto mai come in questo frangente è apparso problematico – sulla somministrazione di vaccini sperimentati in tempi record. La rinuncia, in Italia come altrove, a imporla all’intera popolazione, così come l’avvertita necessità e la ritrosia a farlo per il personale sanitario, indicano che il problema è tutt’altro che semplice e marginale, investendo il rapporto tra stato, scienza e opinione pubblica e le modalità stesse di produzione della conoscenza scientifica. La semplificazione mediatica, in termini di pro e anti-vax, o addirittura di pro e anti-scienza, non ne aiuta la comprensione. Guardando alla questione da diversi punti di vista – dalla governance della salute alla «post-verità», dalle professioni sanitarie alle rappresentazioni individuali e mediatiche dell’esitazione vaccinale – il volume fornisce strumenti per fare luce sulle radici teoriche e motivazionali delle varie posizioni, ritenendo insufficienti le campagne educative o le strategie di persuasione basate sull’assunto del «deficit di comprensione», cui fa da contraltare lo spostamento del confronto scientifico sul piano mediatico. Ne derivano deleterie enfatizzazioni e strumentalizzazioni. Vi è la necessità di un modo diverso di affrontare il tema dei vaccini, non solo in termini di informazione e comunicazione ma di crescita culturale, credibilità delle istituzioni e relazione fiduciaria tra medici e pazienti. Il volume intende contribuire all’ampliamento della prospettiva su un problema complesso, destinato ad assumere rilevanza crescente.
