Abstract
This thesis will examine how the Serbian Diaspora in southern Ontario remembers their life history in the context of different socio-political eras.The person-centered ethnographical approach allows for understanding of how individuals within the Serbian diaspora remember by explaining the social context within an individual's biography.Semi-structured interviews allow for the thesis to attain qualitative data needed to analyze the question of memory among individuals.Individuals reflect upon their personal memories in three different social contexts: the socialist Yugoslav period, the Yugoslav wars and immigration to Canada.This thesis attempts to see whether individuals within the Serbian Diaspora neglect certain parts of their individual memories in order to maintain the norms of their collective cultural identity.This thesis will present how individuals adjust certain aspects of their autobiographies for the sake of collective ethnic identity.It will try to decipher whether reflecting on certain social systems push the question of cultural identity or individual identity to the forefront.This thesis provides evidence that the dominance of cultural and individual memory shift according to the importance of cultural, i.e. ethnic identity in particular socio-political systems.
