A SENSE OF PLACE: \nAn Exploratory Study of Visual Re-presentation into Memory and History \nWhere My World Began

Abstract
This exploratory paper addresses the notion of “sense of place and \nbelonging” through visual re-presentation into history and the memory of people \nwho live in a place where they belong. The place is Pouch Cove, Newfoundland. \nTaking a research creation approach and a qualitative interviewing mode of \ninquiry, I collected stories about the connection between local residents and \nPouch Cove. Reflecting on the locals’ sense of place through their narratives, and \nmy own sense of place when immersing myself in the daily life of Pouch Cove, I \ncreated a body of work for my thesis exhibition. The artworks presented invite \nthe viewers to experience “sense of place” and to interpret it through their own \nperception. The subject under investigation, the place and memories and histories \nof the people of Pouch Cove, has guided my research creation project and inspired \nthe work in the exhibition.
