Cada unidad tiene sus caracter&iacute;sticas muy particulares, que hace que no sea posible la utilizaci&oacute;n rutinaria, sin un estudio previo de las condiciones f&iacute;sicas y un estudio individual de cada enfermo. </span></p> <p style="line-height: 150%" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;">Dos elementos fundamentales constituyen una unidad de telecobaltoterapia: la fuente y el aparato destinado a albergarla. Cada fuente y cada aparato tienen una serie de caracter&iacute;sticas que van a conferir al haz de radiaci&oacute;n, forma, penetraci&oacute;n, penumbra, etc, que son otras tantas variantes favorables o perjudiciales para los tratamientos. Tan solo un factor permanece inmutable: la energ&iacute;a de la radiaci&oacute;n del Cobalto 60, que es de 1,25 Megaelectron voltios. El estudio de las caracter&iacute;sticas f&iacute;sicas del haz de radiaci&oacute;n gamma del Cobalto 60, constituye la dosimetr&iacute;a f&iacute;sica, y es el objeto de la primera parte de este trabajo. </span></p> <p style="line-height: 150%" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;">Una vez en posesi&oacute;n de todos los datos que caracterizan f&iacute;sicamente a una unidad de telecobaltoterapia, puede pasarse a la aplicaci&oacute;n cl&iacute;nica. El objetivo primordial de la terapia por radiaciones ionizantes es llevar un m&aacute;ximo de dosis al tumor, con un m&iacute;nimo de dosis en los tejidos circundantes.
