Abstract
L'usine Arvida de l'Alcan au Saguenay est connue mondialement pour avoir détenu pendant longtemps le titre de la plus grande usine d'aluminium au monde. Elle illustre également d'une manière exemplaire le compromis fordiste qui a dominé l'après-guerre jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Jadis "forteresse ouvrière", elle est actuellement en voie de fermeture, après avoir traversé une importante crise du travail dans les années soixante-dix. Pour sortir de cette crise, les acteurs sociaux ont procédé à un renouvellement du compromis fordiste autour de la sécurité d'emploi, de l'amélioration des conditions de travail et du maintien de la paix industrielle. Ce nouveau compromis permit l'introduction massive de changements technologiques et organisationnels. L'analyse détaillée de ces changements, appuyée notamment sur de nombreux témoignages des ouvriers, démontrent bien comment leurs effets sont fortement influencés par les stratégies des acteurs sociaux. Cette monographie a été réalisée dans le cadre de notre thèse de doctorat (Le rapport salarial, l'automatisation et la crise dans la production de l'aluminium Étude comparative: Québec. Canada. Etats-Unis et France. Université du Québec à Montréal, Département de sociologie, décembre 1991).
