Abstract
En este trabajo se analizan los procesos de aprendizaje de la lengua castellana y de la escritura por parte de los pueblos indígenas de la Araucanía, Pampa y Norpatagonia, desde el siglo XVI hasta finales del XVIII. A partir de un abordaje de registros de miembros de órdenes religiosas (fundamentalmente, el padre Joseph Sánchez Labrador), funcionarios y viajeros, se concluye que este proceso debe entenderse como un diálogo cultural complejo en el cual las decisiones acordadas en concilios religiosos y las cédulas reales enviadas desde el corazón de la Monarquía fueron negociadas y tensionadas por los actores sociales involucrados, generando dinámicas específicas.
