Carmelo Vicent Suria (Valencia, 1890-1957), constituye uno de los nombres más significativos de la escultura valenciana del primer tercio del siglo XX, época en la que sus representantes más destacados alcanzaron fama y reconocimiento. Al igual que ellos, también Vicent fue premiado en diversas exposiciones nacionales de Bellas Artes. Presentada a uno de estos certámenes, donde consiguió una medalla, la talla Labrador valenciano conservada en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Castelló, serviría de modelo a la escultura en piedra que remata el monumento del mismo título en Valencia, una de sus mejores realizaciones en este género. Clasicismo, realismo, excelencia técnica, e identificación con el personaje representado, convergen en una obra, que por su significado simbólico devine un icono del regionalismo escultórico vernáculo.
