En el libro titulado Industrial architecture in Finland (1952), el arquitecto finlandés Viljo Revell (1910-1964) y Kyösti Ålander (1917-1975) recopilan la arquitectura de fábricas y centrales eléctricas construidas en Finlandia. La publicación se convierte en un manifiesto en la década de los cincuenta que reivindica la rotunda y coherente modernidad de las grandes instalaciones industriales desarrolladas en el territorio finlandés por Erkki Huttunen, Alvar Aalto, Erik Bryggman o Aarne Ervi, entre otros. La contención formal, la eficacia técnica, el rigor funcional y la precisión constructiva caracterizan a este conjunto de obras que ilustran las nuevas posibilidades expresivas acordes a los principios modernos. La lógica técnica, objetiva y esencial de la arquitectura industrial se convierte así en vehículo de la renovación formal de la arquitectura finlandesa. En el contexto de la incipiente voluntad de industrialización del país, de planificación nacional y reconstrucción tras la Guerra de Invierno, la trayectoria de Viljo Revell se inicia, tras titularse en 1936 y construir la modernidad ortodoxa del Glass Palace en Helsinki (1936), colaborando en los años cuarenta en la Oficina de Estandarización de la Asociación de Arquitectos de Finlandia. La sede de la Confederación de Industrias Finlandesas que construye en Helsinki (1948-1953), en colaboración de Keijo Petäja y los ingenieros Magnus Malmberg y Väinö J. Hintikka, representa un símbolo del potencial tecnológico de la pujante industria finlandesa. La necesaria flexibilidad funcional caracteriza las grandes luces estructurales de la estructura del hormigón de la fábrica Kudeneule construida en Hanko (1953-1955) en colaboración con el ingeniero Paavo Simula y en la escala doméstica de Tapiola, los proyectos de vivienda de Viljo Revell desarrollan la prefabricación industrial mediante la estandarización de los elementos, combinando el rigor formal con la eficaz producción industrial. La cooperación entre Viljo Revell y el ingeniero Paavo Simula en el desarrollo de estructuras de hormigón se extiende en la audaz lámina parabólica de hormigón armado de la capilla de Vatiala (1962) y en su obra maestra del Ayuntamiento de Toronto (1958-1964) que condensa racionalidad, eficacia técnica, rigor y flexibilidad funcional.
